Few public courses in the Texas Panhandle carry the reputation Wildhorse does. Opened in 2000 and designed by Jeff Brauer, it was built by the City of Amarillo as a serious municipal layout — one that quickly earned recognition as one of the better public-access tracks in the state. Brauer leaned into the treeless, wide-open terrain that defines this part of Texas, routing the course across rolling prairie where wind is not just a factor but a constant protagonist. Expect it to reshape every club decision you make.
The Panhandle landscape itself does the architectural heavy lifting here. Dramatic elevation changes cut through the caliche and native grasses, and the course plays firm and fast — the way links-influenced designs are meant to. Water comes into play on several holes, a notable contrast to the surrounding high plains. The design rewards ground-game thinking and punishes anyone who ignores the breeze.
Amarillo sits at roughly 3,600 feet of elevation, which adds distance to your shots, though the wind will happily take it all back. For a municipal facility, Wildhorse punches well above its weight, offering a genuine test that holds up against private alternatives in the region.
