Few golf courses on earth can claim a more dramatic backdrop. Golf Club del Cervino sits in the Valtournenche valley in Italy's Aosta Valley region, playing out beneath the Matterhorn — the iconic, pyramid-shaped peak that rises to 4,478 meters and looms over virtually every hole. At an elevation of roughly 2,000 meters, this is one of the highest golf courses in Europe, and the thin mountain air means the ball travels noticeably farther than at sea level, a practical quirk that surprises first-time visitors.

The course itself is compact and short by conventional standards, but the terrain is anything but forgiving. Fairways follow the natural contours of alpine meadows, with the Marmore torrent threading through the layout and the surrounding slopes ensuring that errant shots find trouble quickly. The season runs only from summer into early autumn, when the meadows open up between snowfalls and wildflowers edge the rough.

Valtournenche is a quiet mountain village that serves as the Italian base for Matterhorn access, less touristed than Zermatt across the Swiss border but sharing the same staggering peak. Playing golf here feels less like sport and more like a genuine encounter with the Alps.
