Southern Hills Plantation Golf Club sits in Brooksville, a small city in Hernando County about an hour north of Tampa, where Florida's flat coastal plain gives way to something unexpected — rolling karst topography, limestone-fed springs, and genuine elevation changes rare for the state. That terrain makes Brooksville a legitimate outlier on Florida's golf map, and Southern Hills leans into it. Designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 2004, the course was built around a private residential community and quickly earned a reputation as one of the more distinctive layouts in the region, drawing comparisons to Carolinas parkland golf rather than the typical Florida resort aesthetic.
Fazio routed the course through mature hardwoods and dramatic elevation shifts, producing holes that rely on natural contour rather than water hazards and mounding to manufacture interest. The result plays with a weightiness that surprises first-timers expecting the standard sunshine-state formula.
Southern Hills hosts a PGA Tour Champions event and carries legitimate national-caliber credentials. For a private club in a modestly sized inland Florida town, that standing speaks to how seriously the place was built and how well it has held up.
