Golf Course Almerimar

Few corners of the Spanish coast combine serious golf with such a striking agricultural backdrop as this stretch of Almería province. The course at Almerimar sits within a marina and residential resort developed from the 1970s onward on what was previously near-desert terrain — a transformation that made this corner of Andalusia both one of Europe's most productive horticultural regions and, perhaps unexpectedly, a genuine golfing destination. The layout was designed by Gary Player, one of relatively few Spanish courses to carry his name, and plays across flat, open ground where sea breezes off the Mediterranean are a constant factor in club selection and shot shape.

The design suits mid-handicappers well, with generous fairways that reward strategic placement over raw power. Water features appear regularly throughout the round, and the mature palms and subtropical plantings give the course a character quite distinct from the pine-and-heather courses further north.

El Ejido itself is a working town rather than a tourist resort, which gives Almerimar a more local, unpretentious atmosphere than the heavily marketed golf complexes along the Costa del Sol. Visitors here tend to be golfers first.
