Few municipal courses in the Chicago area carry quite as much neighborhood identity as Canal Shores. Hugging the North Shore Channel as it winds through Evanston, the course has long served as a kind of public green space with flagsticks — a place where Northwestern students, longtime residents, and first-time golfers share the same fairways, often within earshot of the city.
With a par of 60, Canal Shores is built around short holes, and the layout rewards shot-making over raw power. The channel itself isn't merely scenic backdrop — it's an active hazard, pressing against several holes and demanding accuracy from players who might otherwise dismiss the course as a casual round. Trees line much of the property, and the urban surroundings give it a compact, almost parkland-corridor feel that's distinct from the broad lakefront landscapes you find elsewhere along the North Shore.
For Evanston, the course is genuinely woven into local life in a way that private clubs never can be — approachable, walkable, and persistently popular across generations.
