Few mountain retreats in the American Southeast carry the accumulated romance of High Hampton. The course sits within a historic inn and estate property in Cashiers, a small plateau community in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, perched above 3,500 feet. George Cobb, the prolific Carolina architect responsible for Augusta National's Par 3 Course among other works, designed the layout to move naturally through the property's dense hardwood forest and across the grounds of the old Hampton estate. The result is a course that plays more like a walk through history than a modern test of ball-striking.
Cashiers occupies one of the most scenically dramatic pockets of the Southern Highlands, where summer temperatures stay cool enough to make golf genuinely pleasant when much of the South is sweltering. The surrounding landscape — rhododendron thickets, towering oaks and hemlocks, and Rock Mountain as a backdrop — is what most golfers remember long after the round is over.
This is a resort and inn property with an old-guard Appalachian character, the kind of place where generations of the same families have summered for decades. Competitive distance and modern conditioning are beside the point here; what High Hampton offers instead is atmosphere, history, and a mountain setting that is essentially irreplaceable.
