Few towns on Cape Cod take their golf as seriously as Harwich, and Cranberry Valley has been the centerpiece of that tradition since it opened in 1974. Designed by Geoffrey Cornish, one of New England's most prolific and beloved architects, the course was built on land that — true to its name — once supported active cranberry bogs. That agricultural past shaped the terrain in ways a bulldozer never quite could: the low-lying wetlands, natural depressions, and sandy soil give the layout an authenticity that feels earned rather than engineered.
Cornish had a gift for routing courses that worked with the land rather than against it, and Cranberry Valley reflects that philosophy throughout. Mature pitch pines and scrub oaks line the fairways, framing shots and penalizing wayward play without manufacturing drama. The course plays as a genuine test for capable players while remaining approachable for the everyday golfer visiting the Cape.
As a public facility run by the Town of Harwich, it carries the character of a community asset — well-maintained, unpretentious, and busy throughout the long Cape Cod season. For visitors making the rounds of Outer Cape golf, it belongs on the list.
