Few golf clubs in the west of England carry quite the historical weight of Bristol and Clifton. Founded in 1891, it is one of the oldest clubs in the region, occupying downland terrain on the Failand ridge to the southwest of the city, with sweeping views across the Bristol Channel toward the Welsh hills on clear days. The course sits within the North Somerset countryside, yet remains just minutes from the urban energy of Bristol — an unusual combination of accessibility and genuine rural atmosphere.
The layout plays across classic English downland: firm, rolling turf, exposed to the prevailing westerly winds, and framed by mature hedgerows and stands of trees. At par 70 the course rewards precision over power, placing a premium on course management and clean ball-striking rather than length alone. The natural contours of the ridge create uneven lies and deceptive angles that regularly humble visitors expecting a gentle afternoon.
Bristol itself has a lively and proud golf culture, and a club of this vintage tends to sit at its heart — well-maintained, deeply traditional, and shaped as much by its membership's history as by the land beneath it.
