Wyoming County sits in the heart of the southern West Virginia coalfields, a landscape of steep ridges, narrow hollows, and the kind of rugged Appalachian terrain that shapes everything around it — including its golf. Oceana, the county seat, is a small town defined by the forks of the Guyandotte River watershed, and Clear Fork Valley takes its name from one of those tributaries cutting through the hills.

An 18-hole course in this part of West Virginia almost certainly works with the land rather than against it, following creek bottoms and ridge contours in ways that a flatter region would never demand.
