Minchinhampton Old Course

Few courses in England carry quite the atmosphere of Minchinhampton Old Course. Laid out across the ancient common land of the Cotswold escarpment above Stroud, it has been in continuous use since the 1890s, making it one of the oldest established clubs in Gloucestershire. The common itself is common land in the truest sense — cattle graze freely across the fairways, and golfers share the plateau with walkers, dogs, and livestock in a scene that would have looked largely familiar to players a century ago.

The course occupies a broad, wind-exposed ridge with sweeping views across the Golden Valley, and that elevation means conditions can shift sharply even on a summer's day. The turf is firm, fast, and characteristically downland in feel — bouncy, unpredictable, rewarding the golfer who keeps the ball low and thinks along the ground.

Minchinhampton Golf Club also operates the newer Avening Course nearby, but the Old Course retains a devoted following among those who value history, eccentricity, and golf played in its most elemental form.
