Few stretches of the Northumberland coastline feel as raw and uncompromising as Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, and the golf club here channels that spirit directly. Founded in 1884, it ranks among the oldest clubs in the north of England, and its links — running along the town's exposed headland and bay — have been shaped by well over a century of North Sea weather. This is golf played in the elements, not around them.
The course occupies genuinely seaside ground, where firm turf, coastal winds, and natural contours do most of the heavy lifting. Links golf in this part of the world tends to reward low runners and local knowledge over power, and Newbiggin is no exception — the wind direction alone can make it play like an entirely different course from one day to the next.
Newbiggin-by-the-Sea itself is a working-class fishing and former mining town with an honest, unpretentious character that matches the golf perfectly. There are no resort trappings here — just a genuine community club with deep roots, a proper links, and one of England's most dramatic northern backdrops.
