Few clubs on the North Shore carry the quiet authority of Essex County Club. Founded in 1893, it ranks among the oldest private clubs in New England, its roots planted in the Gilded Age when Manchester-by-the-Sea was a favored summer retreat for Boston's most prosperous families. Donald Ross put his hands on the course in the early 20th century, leaving the subtle, maddening greens and natural shaping that define his best work throughout the region.
The setting is quintessential coastal Massachusetts — rocky outcroppings, mature hardwoods, and the kind of salt-tinged air that makes distances feel slightly different than they play. The layout moves across rolling, well-drained terrain that shifts with the seasons, demanding patience and shot-making creativity over raw distance.
One important flag: the course is listed here as municipal, but Essex County Club is, by all reliable accounts, a private members' club. Visitors should confirm access before planning a visit — this is not a walk-up facility.
