Few golf settings in Colorado carry quite the character of the San Luis Valley, and Monte Vista Country Club earns its place in it. Sitting at roughly 7,600 feet above sea level in one of the highest and flattest agricultural valleys on the continent, this is high-altitude golf in the truest sense — the air is thin, the sky enormous, and the ball travels noticeably farther than players accustomed to lower elevations expect.
The San Luis Valley stretches between the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the east and the San Juan range to the west, giving the course a dramatic natural backdrop that no architect can manufacture. Monte Vista itself is a small farming community known for its crane migration festival each February, and the course reflects that same unhurried, community-rooted spirit — a club built for locals who take their golf seriously without taking themselves too seriously.
At par 70, the layout leans shorter and strategic rather than a power test, rewarding placement and course management over raw distance — though at this altitude, even modest yardages play differently than expected.
