Few New England golf experiences feel quite as authentically local as a round at Hooper Golf Club, one of the older layouts in southwestern New Hampshire. The course sits in Walpole, a Connecticut River Valley town that punches well above its size in terms of charm — the kind of place with a proper town common, white-steepled churches, and the kind of unhurried pace that feels increasingly rare.
The terrain here does the heavy lifting in terms of character. This corner of the Granite State offers rolling, wooded hillsides and the kind of natural contours that early course designers simply worked with rather than against. The result is a layout that rewards local knowledge — uneven lies, shaded corridors, and holes where the land itself sets the strategic terms.
A par 71 in a region this hilly tends to mean at least a few genuinely demanding two-shotters mixed in with shorter, trickier tests. Hooper carries the feel of a place where golf has been played seriously and simply for generations, without pretension and without apology.
