Van Horne sits in the heart of Benton County, a stretch of east-central Iowa where the land rolls in long, unhurried waves between the Cedar River corridor and the surrounding farm country. It's a modest agricultural community, and the fact that it supports a private 18-hole club at all says something about how seriously golf is woven into small-town Iowa life — where a country club has historically served as much as a social anchor as a sporting one.
Tara Hills fits that tradition. A members-only course in a community this size tends to be the kind of place where regulars know every bounce and break by heart, where the layout has grown alongside its membership over decades, and where the experience is less about prestige than genuine belonging. The course almost certainly plays through open, gently contoured terrain shaped by the same glacial till that defines this part of the Midwest.
Without more on the record about its founding or architect, what can be said with confidence is that Tara Hills represents something worth preserving — local golf at its most rooted, far from resort fanfare.
