Few golf courses in Bulgaria carry the same foundational significance as this one. Air Sofia Golf Club, situated near Ihtiman in the Sofia Province, is one of the earliest established golf facilities in post-communist Bulgaria, playing a genuine role in the slow but steady growth of the game across a country where golf has historically been a rarity. The course sits at the edge of the Ihtiman Pass, where the Sredna Gora mountains rise to the south and the Sofia Valley begins to open out to the west — a landscape that gives the layout a distinctly Central Balkan character, with views that no scorecard entry can adequately convey.
The terrain here is the story: rolling, occasionally dramatic, with the natural contours of the sub-Balkan foothills doing much of the design work. Summers are warm and relatively dry, making the course playable through the longer part of the season.
For visiting golfers, the broader context matters. Sofia itself is roughly 60 kilometres to the west, and the club serves both the capital's small but committed golfing community and travellers passing through on the Sofia–Plovdiv corridor.
