Few public courses in the Southern Tier of New York can match Hiawatha Landing's sense of drama. Designed by Brian Silva and opened in 2001, the course stretches along the Susquehanna River floodplain just outside the small town of Apalachin, and the routing takes full advantage of that setting — wide, open fairways exposed to the wind, minimal tree cover, and long sightlines that give the layout a genuine links character unusual for inland New York. It plays firm and fast when conditions cooperate, rewarding ground game and trajectory management over raw power.
The Susquehanna corridor defines the experience here. Water comes into play on multiple holes, and the riverside location means wind direction can shift the effective difficulty of the course dramatically from one round to the next. That variability is part of the appeal for regulars.
For a public facility in a small upstate community, the ambition of the design is striking. Hiawatha Landing draws players from across the region — Binghamton, Elmira, Ithaca — who make the trip specifically for a layout that offers something the typical parkland track in the area simply doesn't.
