Shelby sits on the High Line of northern Montana, where the plains push hard against the Rockies and the wind comes off the Canadian border without much to slow it down. This is ranching and oil country, a small city that briefly hosted the 1923 Jack Dempsey–Tommy Gibbons heavyweight championship fight and has been quietly proud of its outsized history ever since. Marias Valley takes its name from the Marias River, the waterway Lewis and Clark debated and renamed during their expedition through this corridor. A private members' club in a town this size is a genuine gathering place, and the golf tends to reflect the landscape: open, exposed, shaped by prevailing winds that can turn a straightforward iron into a genuine decision.
