Few public golf courses in America arrive with as much backstory as this one. The links at Ferry Point spent decades as a half-finished municipal dream — the City of New York broke ground in the 1990s, but the project stalled repeatedly through funding crises and political inertia, sitting largely dormant for years. The Trump Organization took over management and completed the course, which finally opened in 2015. Jack Nicklaus designed it, and his fingerprints are unmistakable: broad, rumpled fairways, deep pot bunkers, and fescue-framed corridors that borrow heavily from the British links tradition.
The setting is genuinely dramatic. The course sits on a peninsula jutting into the waters between the Bronx and Queens, with the Whitestone and Throggs Neck bridges visible from the fairways and the Manhattan skyline hovering on the horizon. It is, by any measure, an unlikely place to find a Nicklaus links layout.
For a daily-fee public course, it plays with real ambition and challenge — wind off the water is a constant variable, and the Nicklaus design rewards patience and strategic positioning over raw power.
