Fort Washington sits on a peninsula between the Potomac River and Piscataway Creek, and the land here has been shaping the character of things for a long time — from the old fort that guarded the river approach to Washington, D.C., to the private club community that took root on these bluffs in later decades. National Golf Club at Tantallon is part of that history, tied to the Tantallon on the Potomac planned community that developed along this stretch of Prince George's County beginning in the 1960s and '70s. It's a private members' club in the traditional sense — a course built to serve a community, not to attract a national audience.
The terrain this close to the Potomac tends to be rolling and wooded, with mature hardwoods framing fairways and seasonal color that makes a fall round genuinely worth the trip. The Mid-Atlantic climate means the course plays year-round with some patience, and summers here are genuinely humid.
