South Haven sits on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, where the dune country of southwest Michigan creates some of the most naturally gifted golf terrain in the Midwest. The region draws comparisons to the linksland of the British Isles — sandy soils, native grasses, and prevailing winds off the lake that can turn a comfortable round into something considerably more demanding. It's a corridor that has produced serious golf, and Hawkshead fits squarely into that tradition.
While specific details of Hawkshead's design history aren't widely documented, the area's topography tends to do much of the architecture's work for it. Courses in this part of Michigan routinely use elevation changes carved by glacial activity and dune formations to create natural green sites and strategic bunkering without forcing the land into anything unnatural. Par 72 layouts here often reward course management as much as raw power.
South Haven itself is a classic Lake Michigan summer destination — beaches, fruit orchards, a working harbor. Golf at Hawkshead would suit someone who wants a serious round without straying far from one of the Great Lakes' most appealing shoreline towns.
