Ocean Meadows Golf Club - Closed

Few courses in Southern California carried a name as quietly contradictory as this one — ocean views meeting meadow flatlands just inland from the Santa Barbara coast. Ocean Meadows occupied a stretch of Goleta's low-lying terrain near the Santa Barbara Airport, a layout defined more by open sky and coastal breezes than elevation or dramatic topography. It was the kind of unpretentious public course that served a community for decades, the sort of place where a retired professor from UCSB might play a quick afternoon round alongside a teenager learning the game for the first time.

The Santa Barbara area has long supported a quiet but serious golf culture, with Sandpiper to the west and Birnam Wood and La Cumbre representing the private side of the market. Ocean Meadows filled a different role — accessible, unhurried, and rooted in everyday local play rather than destination appeal.

Its closure leaves a gap that flat, affordable public land near a major coastal city rarely fills twice. Whatever replaces it is unlikely to bring a golf course back.
