Few public courses in Orange County carry the reputation Tijeras Creek has built over the decades. Designed by Ted Robinson and opened in 1990, the course winds through the Tijeras Canyon in the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains, giving it a topographic drama that sets it apart from the flat, residential-adjacent layouts that dominate much of Southern California golf. Robinson's water-feature artistry is on full display here — cascading falls, lakes, and streams are woven into the routing in ways that feel atmospheric rather than merely decorative.
The canyon terrain creates genuine elevation change and forced carries, meaning the course demands real shot-making rather than just distance management. Several holes funnel along natural ridgelines with views across the Saddleback Valley, and the conditioning has historically drawn strong reviews from locals who treat it as one of the region's go-to public options.
Rancho Santa Margarita sits in the eastern edge of Orange County where the suburban grid gives way to open space and preserved land — a setting that makes Tijeras Creek feel considerably more remote and rugged than its address might suggest.
