Few resort complexes in Florida's interior ever matched the ambition Grenelefe once carried. At its peak in the 1970s and '80s, this sprawling property outside Haines City operated 3 full 18-hole courses — the East, West, and South — making it one of the most complete golf destinations in the state. The East Course is part of that legacy, a layout built in an era when central Florida resort golf was genuinely booming, before the Orlando corridor's theme-park gravity pulled most of the tourist traffic northward.
Haines City sits in Polk County, in the heart of the Florida Ridge — slightly elevated ground by the state's flat standards, rolling through citrus country and dotted with the lakes that define this part of the peninsula. That terrain gives courses here a bit more movement than coastal Florida typically offers, and the mature trees and water features common to the region shape the strategic picture round after round.
Grenelefe's overall reputation has had its ups and downs with changes in ownership over the decades, but the property's scale and setting still represent a serious golf outing for anyone passing through central Florida's often-overlooked interior.
