Few golf courses in Canada carry a backstory quite as layered as Bigwin Island's. The original layout was designed by Stanley Thompson — arguably the greatest Canadian golf architect who ever lived — and opened in 1921 as the centrepiece of the Bigwin Inn, a grand resort that drew the Toronto elite and Jazz Age celebrities to the Lake of Bays region of Muskoka. Thompson's routing worked with the island's natural contours and shoreline drama in a way that felt inevitable rather than imposed, a hallmark of his best work. After decades of dormancy following the resort's closure, the course was meticulously restored and reopened in 2002, reclaiming its place among Ontario's most historically significant layouts.
Muskoka itself does much of the heavy lifting scenically. The Canadian Shield granite, towering white pines, and the deep blue of Lake of Bays create a visual intensity that is hard to overstate — this is summer-cottage Ontario at its most iconic.
Getting there requires a ferry crossing, which is less an inconvenience than a deliberate ritual. By the time you step off the boat, the outside world has already started to recede.
