Few golf courses in the world occupy ground quite like Camp Zama's layout, sitting within the boundaries of a U.S. Army installation roughly 40 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. The course serves the military community stationed at Camp Zama, one of the oldest American military posts in Japan, and that unusual setting gives it a character entirely distinct from the surrounding Kanagawa Prefecture's civilian clubs — access is restricted to authorized personnel, their families, and guests, lending it a members'-only intimacy despite its institutional roots.
The terrain here reflects the broader Kanto region, where the flat alluvial plain gives way to gentle rolling hills as you move inland from Tokyo Bay. That topography, combined with the area's humid subtropical climate, means lush conditions through much of the year, with the course playing through mature trees that have had decades to establish themselves on the post's well-maintained grounds.
For service members and their families stationed far from home, a round here carries meaning beyond the scorecard — it's one of the more tangible comforts of a posting in a foreign country, a familiar game in an unfamiliar place.
