Few private clubs in East Tennessee carry the historical weight of Holston Hills Country Club. The course dates to 1927 and was designed by Donald Ross, the Scottish-born architect whose fingerprints are on some of the most revered layouts in American golf. His trademark here — crowned greens that shed approach shots to collection areas, subtle false fronts, and fairways that reward precise positioning over raw power — makes Holston Hills a course that punishes complacency no matter how many times you've played it.
The setting amplifies everything. Knoxville sits where the Ridge and Valley region of the Appalachians gives way to the Tennessee River system, and the rolling, wooded terrain at Holston Hills is exactly the kind of land Ross preferred: enough natural movement to create drama without forcing it. Mature hardwoods frame nearly every hole, giving the course a cathedral quality that feels entirely of its place.
As a private members' club, Holston Hills offers the unhurried, relationship-driven golf experience that has largely disappeared elsewhere — a course worth knowing someone to play.
