Clitheroe

Few Lancashire clubs carry the heritage that Clitheroe Golf Club does. Founded in 1891, it ranks among the older established clubs in the north of England, and its course on the elevated ground above the Ribble Valley has been shaped over generations into something genuinely distinctive. James Braid, the five-time Open Champion turned prolific course architect, had a hand in its development — a credential that places Clitheroe in fine company across the British Isles.

The course sits on limestone upland, and that geology matters. The turf tends toward the firm and fast, the fairways roll with the kind of natural movement that architects today would pay a fortune to manufacture, and the views across to Pendle Hill and the Forest of Bowland are an ever-present reminder of where you are. Clitheroe itself is a market town of real character, with the Norman castle keep visible for miles around.

At par 70, the course does not rely on length to defend itself. Precision off the tee and a sharp short game are rewarded here far more than raw power — a thoroughly traditional test of the sport.
