Jack Nicklaus brought his design eye to the southwestern corner of Michigan in 2010, and the result is a course that has earned a place on the national stage almost immediately. Harbor Shores sits along the Paw Paw River and Lake Michigan shoreline in Benton Harbor, weaving through a reclaimed brownfield site that had been an underused stretch of riverfront land — a genuinely unusual origin story for a Nicklaus Signature design. That backstory gives the course a community-revitalization dimension you don't often associate with tournament-caliber golf.
The course has hosted the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship multiple times, which tells you something about how quickly it earned credibility. The layout plays along and across the water in ways that demand real shot-shaping, and the lakeside exposure means wind is rarely a neutral factor. The par-71 configuration is not a concession but a deliberate design choice that keeps the routing honest.
Southwest Michigan is serious golf country — the Lake Michigan shoreline corridor runs north through courses like Arcadia Bluffs and Crystal Downs, and Harbor Shores holds its own in that distinguished company.
