Ocean Reef Club sits at the northern tip of Key Largo, the uppermost of the Florida Keys, occupying a private enclave that feels genuinely removed from the rest of the world. The club is one of the most exclusive private communities in the United States — a members-only residential retreat where access is tightly controlled and the atmosphere is decidedly unhurried. Golf here is very much part of a broader lifestyle, played among people who know each other and return season after season.
The Hammock Course takes its name from the subtropical hardwood hammocks native to the Keys — dense stands of mahogany, gumbo-limbo, and strangler fig that form the region's signature upland ecosystem. That vegetation gives the layout a lush, enclosed character quite unlike the exposed links-style designs common to Florida's coasts, with canopied stretches that offer shade and a sense of depth unusual for courses this far south.
Key Largo's golf scene is intimate by nature — the island isn't a golf destination in the conventional sense, which makes Ocean Reef's courses a genuine rarity. Playing the Hammock Course means playing somewhere most golfers will never set foot.
