Jerramungup Golf Club

Jerramungup sits in one of Western Australia's more remote corners, a small agricultural town on the south coast roughly halfway between Albany and Esperance. The surrounding landscape is defined by vast wheat and sheep farmland carved out of mallee scrubland in a government land release scheme during the 1960s and 70s — one of WA's last great settlement frontiers. That pioneer character carries over into the golf club, a community-run layout built by and for the locals rather than any design firm, with the course shaped around the flat to gently rolling terrain typical of the Fitzgerald River region.

Like many outback WA country clubs, Jerramungup almost certainly plays on compacted sand or "browns" rather than grass greens, a practical adaptation to the hot, dry summers of the south coast wheatbelt. These sand greens reward a particular local knowledge — reading them is its own skill set — and give the club an honest, unpretentious character.
