Ranau Golf Club

Ranau Golf Club sits in one of the more dramatic natural settings in all of Southeast Asian golf. Ranau is a small district town in the interior of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, positioned in the shadow of Mount Kinabalu — at 4,095 metres, the highest peak between the Himalayas and New Guinea. Playing here means doing so with that granite massif filling the sky above you, a backdrop that no course architect could ever design or manufacture.

Sabah's interior is cooler and greener than the coastal lowlands, and Ranau's elevation keeps conditions genuinely pleasant by tropical standards. The surrounding landscape is a mix of agricultural land, montane forest, and river valleys, and the course reflects that rural, working-region character — this is community golf, the kind of layout that serves local residents, plantation workers, and the occasional traveller passing through on the way to Kinabalu Park.

For visiting golfers, the draw is less about the course design itself and more about the sheer improbability of the setting: a round here puts you closer to one of the world's great mountains than almost anywhere else you could tee it up.
