Fortune Bay Resort Casino sits on the shore of Lake Vermilion in the heart of Minnesota's Iron Range — a landscape of birch forests, glacial lakes, and mining heritage that feels genuinely remote even by northern Minnesota standards. Tower sits near the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and that sense of deep northwoods isolation carries straight onto the golf course. Lake Vermilion itself is one of the largest and most storied lakes in the state, drawing visitors who come for the fishing and the quiet as much as anything else.
The Wilderness at Fortune Bay is the golf operation tied to the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe's resort property, making it part of a broader tradition of tribally owned destination facilities across Minnesota that have invested seriously in recreational amenities. Courses in this region are built around the land rather than imposed upon it, and the boreal setting — pines, granite outcroppings, wetlands, dramatic elevation changes — tends to do most of the aesthetic heavy lifting.
For traveling golfers, this is a remote round worth planning around. The Iron Range doesn't have a deep golf infrastructure, so Fortune Bay functions as a true destination rather than a stop along a well-worn trail.
