Houston's golf scene runs deep — the city has produced more major champions than almost anywhere in America, and the demand for accessible, quality public golf has shaped a dense network of courses across Harris County and its surrounding sprawl. Lakes sits within that ecosystem, one of several municipal and daily-fee layouts that keep the game available to Houston's enormous and genuinely passionate golfing population year-round.
The name points to what the land itself provides. The flat coastal prairie that defines greater Houston means architects here work with water — channeling it, featuring it, using it to create the definition and risk that rolling terrain would otherwise supply. A course called Lakes almost certainly puts that resource front and center, with carries and lateral hazards that reward straight, committed shot-making over raw distance.
Houston's subtropical climate means nearly 12 months of playable golf, though summer rounds come with serious heat and humidity. Bermuda fairways and greens are the norm, and the turf tends to stay lush well into the fall season when conditions are at their most inviting.
