Portage Lake Golf Course occupies one of the more dramatic settings in Midwestern golf, perched in Michigan's Upper Peninsula amid the copper country of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Houghton is a college town — home to Michigan Technological University — and the golf course has long served as a community anchor in a region where the short summer season makes every round feel a little more earned. The surrounding landscape is defined by forested ridges, cold inland lakes, and the deep waters of Portage Lake itself, which connects Lake Superior to the interior of the peninsula.
Golf up here carries a particular character: the air is clean and cool even in July, the fairways tend to run firm in the brief dry stretches, and the wooded terrain puts a premium on positioning over raw power. The Upper Peninsula has never been a golf destination in the resort sense, which gives courses like this one an unhurried, locals-first personality that's increasingly rare.
For visitors making the long drive north — and it is a long drive — Portage Lake is the kind of place that rewards the journey simply by existing where it does.
