Belleair sits on a narrow peninsula between Clearwater Harbor and the open Gulf, and the Belleair Country Club's East Course carries the full weight of that history. The club dates to the early 20th century, developed in the grand Florida resort tradition when Standard Oil heir Henry Plant's railroad empire was still reshaping the Gulf Coast. Donald Ross — whose fingerprints are on more of America's great courses than any other architect — shaped the East Course, and his work here reflects his characteristic trust in the land: subtle contouring, crowned greens that repel imprecise approaches, and a routing that makes strategic use of every available foot of the peninsula's terrain.
The East Course plays to a par 71, a hint that shotmaking matters more here than raw power. Ross designs rarely punish length so much as they reward thought, and this one is no exception — approach angles and green-reading tend to decide rounds.
Belleair itself is one of Tampa Bay's quieter, more affluent enclaves, and the club maintains an atmosphere that reflects that unhurried character. For golfers who appreciate classical design on land that has hosted serious competition for over a century, the East Course delivers something the scorecard simply cannot convey.
