Few private clubs in New Jersey carry the name recognition of Shackamaxon Country Club. Designed by A.W. Tillinghast — the same architect behind Baltusrol, Winged Foot, and Bethpage Black — the course stands as one of his lesser-heralded but genuinely rewarding works, reflecting his instinct for strategic variety and natural ground movement. The par-70 layout plays shorter than many championship tests but demands precise ball-striking and course management in the Tillinghast tradition.
Scotch Plains sits in Union County, in the heart of New Jersey's densely populated but surprisingly golf-rich corridor. The area's rolling terrain gave Tillinghast natural material to work with, and the result is a course that feels at once intimate and demanding — a members' club in the truest sense, shaped by decades of tradition rather than resort ambition.
