Few municipal courses in the Pacific Northwest carry the history that Downriver does. Opened in 1915, it stands as one of Spokane's oldest public layouts and a genuine civic institution — the kind of place where generations of local families have learned the game and where serious players still show up to compete. The course winds through a river corridor just northwest of downtown, following the natural contours of the Spokane River canyon, and the mature ponderosa pines that line its fairways give it a character that no amount of design budget can manufacture.
The terrain does the heavy lifting here. Elevation changes, doglegs shaped by the land rather than by formula, and the constant presence of the river valley create a routing that demands thought as much as power. It plays to a par of 71, a number that quietly signals this isn't a bomber's paradise — shot-making and course management matter.
Spokane's high desert climate means firm, fast conditions through much of the summer, with the pine-framed fairways offering a distinctly inland Northwest feel that sets Downriver apart from the resort-polished courses further west.
