Golf d'Ilbarritz

Few courses in Europe announce themselves quite so dramatically. Golf d'Ilbarritz occupies the grounds of a Belle Époque château perched above the Atlantic coast just south of Biarritz, and the setting is as theatrical as French golf gets — crashing surf audible from nearly every hole, the Pyrenees visible on clear days to the southeast, and a sprawling 19th-century manor serving as the clubhouse. The layout was designed by American architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., whose fingerprints are visible in the boldly contoured greens and strategic bunkering.

The course is relatively compact — an executive-length layout — which makes it deceptively accessible but not without teeth. The ocean-facing holes play into and across prevailing Atlantic winds that can shred a scorecard without warning. The terrain rolls and drops dramatically toward the cliff edge, and the views from the higher ground are genuinely hard to shake.

Bidart sits between Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the Basque Country, one of the most culturally distinctive corners of France. The region's golf culture is serious and well-rooted, and Ilbarritz offers a rare chance to play a course where landscape and architecture feel like genuine co-designers.
