Schaffer's Mill is a private club carved into the Sierra Nevada high country just outside Truckee, where the elevation runs above 6,000 feet and the landscape is defined by granite outcroppings, stands of lodgepole pine, and the kind of thin mountain air that adds genuine carry to every shot. The club is part of a residential community developed in the early 2000s on land that was historically tied to the timber and railroad industries that built this part of Northern California — the name itself nods to that logging heritage.
The course plays to a par 71, which signals at least one asymmetric set of par counts, and the mountain terrain means elevation change is a constant factor in club selection. Aerial drama and forced carries through the pines are signatures of mountain courses at this altitude, and Schaffer's Mill leans into that setting rather than fighting it.
Truckee sits near Lake Tahoe and draws a well-traveled golf audience — visitors who expect serious scenery alongside serious golf. The short Sierra Nevada season concentrates play into summer and early fall, giving the course a distinctly precious, fleeting quality.
