Few clubs in the Essex commuter belt carry quite the pedigree of Abridge Golf & Country Club. The course was designed by Henry Cotton — 3-time Open Champion and one of Britain's most distinguished golf personalities — and opened in 1964, giving it a lineage that sets it apart from the many workaday parkland tracks scattered across this corner of the Home Counties. Cotton's design philosophy favoured courses that rewarded thinking over brute force, and Abridge reflects that: the routing makes intelligent use of the gently rolling Essex countryside, with mature trees framing fairways that demand placement rather than power.
The club sits near the village of Stapleford Tawney, on the rural fringes where Essex begins to feel genuinely removed from the weight of London to the southwest. The Roding Valley landscape gives the course a surprisingly open, airy quality in places, while tree-lined corridors elsewhere create a sense of enclosure and real consequence for a wayward shot.
As a well-regarded members' club with a strong local following, Abridge strikes a balance between serious test and enjoyable day out — the kind of place where the history underfoot adds something a scorecard simply cannot convey.
