Few courses in American golf carry the mystique of Riviera. Designed by George Thomas and Billy Bell and opened in 1926, it earned the nickname "the Riviera of America" for its glamour and setting, then "the Riviera of American Golf" as its reputation on the course matched its surroundings. Thomas's routing across a canyon-laced stretch of the Santa Monica Mountains remains one of the most admired pieces of architecture in the country — a design that rewards shot-making intelligence over raw power, with fairway bunkers placed to punish the tee shot you didn't think through.
The course has hosted the Los Angeles Open (now the Genesis Invitational) more times than any other venue, and Tiger Woods, famously, has never won there despite decades of trying — a quirk that has taken on an almost mythological quality among fans. The par-3 6th, with its bunker cut directly into the center of the green, is one of the most photographed and debated holes in the world.
Pacific Palisades sits between Malibu and Santa Monica, where the coastal marine layer keeps summers mild and the landscape stays green year-round. For a private club, Riviera carries an unusually large public profile — this is genuinely one of the great courses anywhere.
