Tarandowah Golfers Club occupies a stretch of southwestern Ontario farmland that has been sculpted into one of Canada's most celebrated public-access courses. Designed by Jim Urbina — a protégé of Tom Doak — and opened in 2004, Tarandowah draws heavily from the minimalist, natural-contour philosophy of the Renaissance Golf Design school. Urbina moved little earth and let the existing terrain dictate the routing, producing fairways that roll and pitch in ways that feel discovered rather than built. The result earned the course immediate national attention and a place on several prominent Canadian course rankings.
The par-70 layout rewards shot-shaping and strategic thinking over raw distance. Fescue-lined corridors, firm and fast playing surfaces, and greens with genuine movement demand that you think your way around rather than overpower it. It plays shorter than many modern designs but rarely feels easy.
Avon sits in Oxford County, a quietly pastoral corner of Ontario between London and Woodstock. There's nothing flashy about the surrounding landscape — and that's exactly the point. Tarandowah earns its reputation through the golf itself.
