Few municipal courses in the Kansas City metro carry quite the personality that Painted Hills does. The par-70 layout sits on the Kansas side of the state line, in a city that often plays second fiddle to its Missouri neighbor but has its own deep civic pride — and this public course reflects that unpretentious, come-as-you-are character. It's the kind of place where regulars know every break and bounce, and newcomers are welcomed into the rhythm quickly.
The name itself hints at the terrain. The rolling, glacially shaped landscape of northeastern Kansas produces elevation changes and sightlines that give the course genuine visual interest, and the mix of open and tree-lined holes means players have to think their way around rather than simply overpower it. A par-70 configuration typically signals shorter par-4s and a premium on precision over raw distance.
Kansas City's golf scene is quietly strong on both sides of the state line, with a range of public options that punch well above their price points. Painted Hills fits comfortably in that tradition — honest, accessible, and worth the round.
