Shortland Waters has long been one of the Hunter Valley's most accessible and well-regarded public-access layouts, sitting just outside Newcastle in the suburb of Shortland on the banks of the Hunter River floodplain. The flat, open terrain shapes everything about how the course plays — fairways are generous and the ball runs freely, making it a welcoming track for mid-to-high handicappers while still rewarding players who work the ground game rather than simply launching it skyward.
Newcastle's golf scene punches well above the weight of a regional city, and Shortland Waters has served as a community anchor for decades, regularly hosting local competition golf and introducing generations of Hunter residents to the game. The proximity to water — the Hunter River and various drainage channels weave through the property — brings both character and genuine penalty; errant shots find wet trouble more often than the open layout initially suggests.
At par 71, the card plays slightly short of a full-length test, but the course earns its respect through consistency, condition, and the kind of unpretentious atmosphere that keeps members and visitors returning week after week.
