Few courses in Michigan carry the institutional weight of Black Lake Golf Club. Designed by Rees Jones and opened in 2000, it serves as the centerpiece of the UAW's Black Lake Conference Center — a union-owned retreat on the shores of Black Lake in northern lower Michigan. That unusual origin story gives the place a character unlike any private or resort course: built for working people, maintained to championship standards, and open to UAW members, retirees, and their guests.
Jones shaped the layout across a densely wooded, rolling landscape typical of the Pigeon River Country region, where hardwood forests and glacial terrain define the scenery. The course demands thoughtful shot-making off the tee, with tree-lined corridors and water coming into play on multiple holes. It routinely earns recognition among Michigan's best courses, a ranking that surprises first-timers who don't expect this level of conditioning and design this far north.
Onaway sits in Presque Isle County, a quiet corner of the state where outdoor recreation — hunting, fishing, paddling — anchors local life. Playing Black Lake means immersing yourself in genuine northwoods Michigan, a long way from the resort crowds of Traverse City or Petoskey.
