Pioneer sits in the Amador County foothills of the Sierra Nevada, about an hour southeast of Sacramento along Highway 88. At roughly 2,500 feet of elevation, the surrounding landscape is a mix of ponderosa pine, cedar, and open meadowland — the kind of Gold Country terrain that feels genuinely removed from the valley heat below. The region draws visitors for its wine country, historic mining towns, and access to the high Sierra, and Mace Meadows fits naturally into that unhurried, small-town rhythm.
The course itself occupies the meadow its name promises, and the combination of open fairways and tree-lined holes gives it a character that shifts as you move through the round. Elevation changes common to foothill terrain add variety that a flat scorecard reading can't convey, and the mountain air and pines lend it an atmosphere that courses at lower elevation simply can't replicate.
For golfers traveling Highway 88 toward Lake Tahoe or the Kirkwood ski area, Mace Meadows makes a natural stop — a full 18-hole layout in a setting that punches well above what you'd expect from a small mountain community course.
