Star Valley Ranch sits in one of Wyoming's least-celebrated but genuinely beautiful corridors — the Star Valley, a broad agricultural basin tucked between the Salt River Range and Wyoming Range in the state's far southwest corner. The valley runs roughly parallel to Idaho's border, and the landscape here has more in common with the high meadows of eastern Idaho than with the sagebrush flats most people picture when they think of Wyoming. Summers are short, the air is thin, and the surrounding peaks hold snow well into June.
The Aspen Hills course is part of the Star Valley Ranch planned community outside Thayne, a small town that serves as the valley's commercial center. That community context shapes what the course is — a member-oriented layout designed to complement an outdoor lifestyle rather than attract a regional tournament circuit. The aspens in the name are real; the area's hillsides turn a vivid gold each September, making the back half of the golf season visually memorable.
At 6,000-plus feet of elevation, even a modest layout plays shorter than its yardage suggests, and drives carry noticeably farther than at sea level — one of the quiet perks of mountain golf that no scorecard can fully communicate.
