Orange Tree Golf Resort has been a fixture of the Scottsdale scene since the 1950s, and its name comes honestly — the course was originally carved through working citrus groves, and traces of that agricultural past still give it a character distinct from the desert-and-rock layouts that define much of modern Phoenix-area golf. Where many Scottsdale courses lean into dramatic elevation and native scrub, Orange Tree feels comparatively lush and parkland in spirit, a reminder of what the Valley of the Sun looked like before the resort boom reshaped it.
The course plays as a resort layout in the best sense: approachable enough that a vacationing mid-handicapper won't lose a sleeve of balls, but with enough nuance in its tree-lined corridors and greens complexes to reward better players who pay attention. It suits the golfer who wants a relaxed round in genuine sunshine rather than a survival test.
Scottsdale's year-round warmth and reliable skies make Orange Tree a sensible choice at almost any time of year, though the spring and fall shoulder seasons are when the desert climate is at its most forgiving and the course tends to be in prime shape.
