Chartham Park sits on a historic estate in the Sussex Weald, just south of East Grinstead, where the High Weald's characteristic clay soils and dense woodland give the course a distinctly English country feel. The course opened in 1993, routed through parkland that retains genuine maturity thanks to the ancient trees and hedgerows of the original estate grounds. It plays as a full-length par 72 with enough variety in its wooded corridors and open, undulating stretches to reward accurate driving.
East Grinstead itself straddles the Surrey-Sussex border in an area well-served by private and semi-private parkland clubs, so Chartham Park competes in reasonably good company. The surrounding High Weald landscape — a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty — means even errant shots tend to land somewhere photogenic, though extricating yourself from the mature oaks and birches is another matter entirely.
As a country club layout, it carries the feel of a members' course that also welcomes visiting societies, blending unpretentious hospitality with a setting that does most of the atmospheric heavy lifting on its own.
